Background
Upon decommissioning of the original Republic, Starfleet quickly recycled the name "Republic" to the construction of another one of their tried-and-trusted galaxy class starships. The USS Republic NCC-1371-A incorporates additional firepower, more crew complement, and more features such as the ever so popular holodeck.
The First Republic
The Republic A is the second starship to carry the name. The first Republic, interestingly enough, was the first assignment of the legendary Captain James T. Kirk.
In 2293, the Republic was assigned to Neutral Zone patrol during the time Operation Retrieve was proposed. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
By the early 24th century the Republic was assigned as a training ship for Starfleet Academy cadets. Although it would continue to serve the fleet through as late as 2374, it had not left the Sol System since the 2320s. (DS9: "Valiant")
The Republic was decommissioned in 2386. One of the newer Galaxy Class starships currently under construction will become the Republic A.
