Standard tactics

Using the Shadow Cloak at extreme range the Kubikiri closes with its target while delivering heavy damage from its forward cannons and quantum torpedo volleys. Often this initial strike is enough to cripple a target's shields before they can even manage to penetrate the ship's 'cloak', leaving them vulnerable to a ramming attack. Should the target survive this assault the Kubikiri swings around, further dampening shields and systems with its aft beam arrays as she gains ground before swinging around for another attack run.

Strengths

Heavily armed and with an experienced engineer at the helm the Kubikiri is a rugged fighter capable of weathering enemy attacks while returning fire as good as she gets.

Weaknesses

With most of its heavy weapons mounted forwards facing the Kubikiri can be vulnerable to flanking attacks, particularly 'broadside' barrages from vessels armed with both forward and aft facing beam arrays.

History

Origins

The USS Defiant in 2373
The USS Defiant in 2373

During the Dominion War certain parties within the Federation saw the need for more effective information gathering deep within enemy territory. After the Valiant Incident in 2374 they saw the potential in the Defiant-class for just such a role. However in order to protect their own anonymity they wouldn't just be able to design a vessel purely with this goal in mind, instead agents within the Admiralty pushed for the design of the new Tanto-class instead.

Deliberately designed with key systems as modular components, including weapons systems, life support and computer systems, this ship class was really the basis for the new stealth infiltrator. Once the prototypes were active the interested parties arranged for an incident where one vessel, the USS Yoshimitsu, appeared to be lost with all hands. In reality the vessel was manned with officers loyal to the interested parties and the incident allowed the Yoshimitsu to be placed under their direct control.

Later Development

Moved to a secret facility the Yoshimitsu was renamed the USS Kubikiri and the modular systems removed in favour of different systems which would allow the ship to operate as it had truly been designed to. Placed under the command of a former Borg drone, whose cybernetic implants allowed her to interface directly with these new systems, the ship was sent into Romulan space for a shakedown cruise.

During her maiden voyage the Kubikiri performed above expectation, arriving at her rendezvous with a captured Romulan frigate, which had been disabled and boarded by the Starfleet officers using their advanced new systems while in orbit of a planet just the other side of the Romulan neutral zone. Decloaked while performing a survey mission, the vessel was taken while most of the crew were down on the surface and after beaming the rest of the Romulans to the planet the Kubikiri escorted the vessel to Federation space.

With the computer system of the Romulan ship intact Starfleet were able to gain significant information on recent fleet deployments in the region, allowing them to take advantage and prevent a number of attempted incursions. Gaining favour with the interested parties the Kubikiri was granted a license to work independently and once a discrete communications network was put in place the ship vanished into deep space, only to be heard from when submitting intelligence reports to their superiors and when calling into remote starbases for resupply.

Crew

Captain (Engineer)

Captain 16 of 69: Female Human from the Federation colony Mantilles. Originally called Jessica Marie Jones 16 of 69 was assimilated by the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359. After the return of the Voyager 16 was recovered from the Collective but faced having to restart her career with Starfleet. Recognising the potential of a loyal former Borg drone who they'd be able to manipulate the interested parties made contact with 16, quickly having her reassigned to their control and giving her command of the USS Kubikiri, which had been specifically design to be operated in unison with her remaining implants.

First Officer (Engineer Bridge Officer)

Commander 18 of 69: Female Human born in space and living there until she was assimilated by the Borg on their way to Wolf 359. Upon their return to the Delta Quadrant the young girl who would become 18 or 69 was placed in the same Unimatrix as Lt Jessica Jones. While working together, along with another Klingon drone 17 of 69, the two wer rescued from the Collective and once 16 of 69 was accepted back into Starfleet she petitioned for her 'friend' to be placed into her custody. Working very closely with 16 of 69 18 of 69 has been recognised as a valuable member of her crew, even if some within Starfleet still mistrust her.
Traits: Efficient, Resilient, Superior Borg nanites
Skills: Emergency power to shields, Engineering team, Auxiliary to Structural, Aceton field, Chroniton mine barrier, Weapons malfunction, Shield generator fabrication, Support drone fabrication, Superior Borg neural blast
Notes: 18 of 69 still shares a partial neural link with 16 of 69. While this is very useful when on duty rumours of their use of it when off duty persist.

Tactical Officer (Tactical Bridge Officer)

Commander Zubath, House of Velkriv: Female Klingon/Human hybrid born in space after her mother was forced from her home in the Otha system by rising tensons between the Klingon Empire and the Federation. Raised on Deepspace K7 she found herself often bullied for her Klingon physical traits and soon learnt that respect comes from being the person most willing to strike first and strike hard, particularly when in defense of an ally. This philosophy serves her well in combat, where she can make use of ship's weapons to perform devastating first strikes, but has often left her personal life unhappy.
Traits: Sure footed, Sturdy, Honourable, Warrior
Skills: Torpedo spread, Cannon rapid fire, Attack pattern delta
Notes: Rumour has it that Cmdr Zubath once had an long running affair with a senior officer. The files on the matter are currently sealed.

Chief of Security (Tactical Bridge Officer)

Commander Lyaas Takarra: Zhen Andorian, born on Kei but raised on Andoria. Lyaas has always been a physically powerful woman, having been brought up from an early age following her father's belief in traditional Andorian trraditions many of which test the body to its limits. An athlete on her homeworld and a survivalist by training Takarra joined Starfleet on a scholarship after winning several prestigious sporting events, including a winter biathlon event. Her precision and skill make her an excellent marksman. Lyaas's leaves have coincided with the assassinations of prominent individuals on a number of occasions.
Traits: Cold dwelling, Stubborn, Acute senses, Fury
Skills: Photon grenade, Focus fire, Suppressing fire, Fire on my mark
Notes: Cmdr Takarra is currently assigned to light duties having recently become pregnant, partners unknown.

Beta Shift Chief of Security

Commander Dyssyl 'Bombah' Sohl: Shen Andorian, born and raised on Kei. Growing up Dyssyl was always a big girl, strong and muscular and most often found in the core of any playground fight. As she got older this attitude changed very little and even now she prefers to use brute forces to solve her problems and to get what she wants from life. In combat she carries the biggest gun she can find, throws grenades with little or no care for her colleagues or herself and often physcially throws herself into close combat. Her private life is much the same, with raw physicality being used to bully her lovers into bed.
Traits: Cold dwelling, Aggressive, Acute senses, Superior Creative
Skills: Photon grenade, Smoke grenade, Target optics, Lunge
Notes: Due to Cmdr Takarra's pregnancy Cmdr Sohl has been temporarily assigned her away mission duties.

Chief of Engineering

Commander Christen Ethel Yamauchi: Female Human of the Vulcanis Lunar colony, a follower of the Vulcan teachings of pure logic. Originally a staunch Starfleet officer dedicated to the ideals of the Federation she came to see the logic of the interested parties's position during the Dominion War. Christen was instrumental in the sidelining of the USS Yoshimitsu for the parties's use by rigging the fake destruction of the vessel. Officially recorded as KIA by Starfleet, presently she is researching ways to improve the ship's stealth systems to allow even deeper infiltration into enemy space.
Traits: Creative, Resilient, Teamwork, Leadership
Skills: Engineering team, Directed energy modulation, Reverse shield polarity, Boarding party
Notes: Cmdr Yamauchi has been hospitalised on a number of occasions for attempting mind melds with incompatible partners. Caution is advised.

Science/Communications Officer (Science Bridge Officer)

Commander Nulira Jast: Female unjoined Trill born onboard USS Takahashi during a long-range recon mission but raised on Commissariate. Daughter of a talented Starfleet science officer, she joined Starfleet at a young age. Horrified by the way evil deeds were allowed be performed by the Klingon Empire in the name of peace she soon came to the attention of the interested parties. Specialising in signals analysis her natural ability led her into communications, and during her career she has pioneered several methods of making discreet transmissions to undercover and infiltrated agents.
Traits: Peak health, Mental discipline, Limited telepathy, Hyper metabolism
Skills: Jam sensors, Hazard emitters, Scramble sensors, Viral matrix
Notes: With limited telepathic ability Cmdr Jast has been known to 'spy' on her crewmates during their offduty hours.

Beta Shift Science/Communications Officer (Science Bridge Officer)

Commander Darwohl 'Shunt' Vali: Female Bolian place of birth unknown. Rescued at a young age from Nausicaan pirates in the employ of the Orion Syndicate Darwohl was always a very nervous person growing up. Always looking over her shoulder and expecting to be attacked at any time she has developed a very evasive personality which allow her to keep a distance from others. The fact she has specialised her scientific talents in tractor and repulsor beam technology seems to build on her natural desire to keep other away. During her time on the Kubikiri she seems to have settled into the crew nicely, mainly due to its small size.
Traits: Peak health, Superior sure footed, Creative, Corrosive blood
Skills: Science team, Tractor beam, Tractor beam repulsors, Photonic shock wave
Notes: Cmdr Vali has a history of addictive holodeck use. Her assignment to a vessel with no such facilities may be problematic.

Chief Medical Officer

Dr (Commander) Nada 'Doc' Mullennex: Female Human from Volan II, a former Federation colony ceded to the Cardassian Union in 2370. Growing up in the impoverished conditions of the colony after their defeat during the Dominion War, and suffering a wound to her eyes which was left untreated for too long resulting in near total blindness, Nada vowed to take whatever steps required to never end up in those conditions ever again. Learning her medical skills on the streets she's more of a trauma surgeon than a general practitioner, something which the crew of the Kubikiri have been thankful for on a number of occasions.
Traits: Creative, Sure footed, Teamwork, Leadership
Skills: Medical tricorder, Vascular regenerator, Sonic pulse, Nanite health monitor.
Notes: Dr Mullennex has a deep seated hated of Cardassians and should not be permitted to perform medical procedures on them under any circumstance.

Special Equipment

Advanced Automation System

Making use of the last remaining Borg implants on her body 16 of 69 literally wires herself into the Kubikiri's systems. With this unparalleled level of control 16 can coordinate the activities of the crew to an almost Borg level of efficiency, directing their efforts wherever most needed. This not only allows the captain to direct engineering teams to best effect in the heat of battle but also allows her to monitor their health, ensuring the best possible care is taken to keep every member of her small crew fighting fit.

Note: This is a combination of the Engineering Team Bridge Officer abilty, Science Team Bridge Officer abilty and the Biofunction Monitor Science Console.

Shadow 'Cloaking' Device

An advanced form of the refractive shielding technology obtained by the USS Voyager while in the Delta Quadrant, the Shadow Cloak works by altering the waveform of any scanners interacting with the field so that they read a negative response. This technology has an advantage over standard cloaking devices as it relies on the power of the target's own sensors in order to blind them, greatly reducing the energy output required to operate the field. The disadvantage is that a most targets can quickly rotate frequency sensors, fouling the cloak and requiring it to be reset before attemting the maneuvre again.

Note: This is actually the Jam Sensors Bridge Offcier ability.

Red Matter Capacitor

The Red Matter Capacitor is a rare item which makes use of red matter in order to generate large amounts of energy for a short period that charges up and delivers extra power to all of ship’s systems for a short time. Due to the unstable nature of red matter the capacitor requires long periods to cool once used making it best used for emergency situations only.

Automated Defense Turret

Slaved directly to the ship's proximity sensors the automated plasma defense turret will open fire on any target within 4km which it perceives to be a threat. This includes incoming projectiles (plasma torpedoes and mines), enemy vessels and occasionally dangerous clouds of interstellar gas, such as those found within the Briar Patch.
