Personality
Though short in stature Commander Helms is able to command attention from anyone. He is usually found smiling and has a more relaxed nature with his crew than most. His bright smile can however quickly disappear when he is threatened or on a mission, but he enjoys deployment to new planets and finds his occupation relaxing.
Biography
Much of his past is blurry to even him and no significant events occur to him from childhood. His life was significantly changed after attending Starfleet Academy and his accounts of his best moments come from the academy. At the academy he started out as an average student but quickly became a top student and graduated in the top 20% of his class. He was quite unsure of what his eventual career would be. Staying away from combat he would often switch between medical and engineering programs. His eventual selection of Engineering was attributed to the advice from an old friend of his grandfather, the famous Geordi Laforge.
Hobbies/Pastimes
Though an explorer at heart, Commander Helms enjoys entering starship combat simulations in the holodecks.
Political Ideology
At times it would seem that Commander Helms reads nothing but the Starfleet policies and numerous manuals. It is often believed that it is not his belief in them that provokes this behavior but as he says "I must sometimes pick up such materials to remind myself of their existence." He takes no unnecessary risks however he is quick to find means other than those he was taught to succeed in every situation.

Occupation
- Engineer: Though he is now happy in the Captain's chair, Commander Helms has extensive knowledge in ship parts and repairing of its systems. He sometimes will assist with projects in engineering when his guidance is needed.
Side Trait
- Martial Artist: Commander Helms is a very aggressive hand to hand fighter. He uses some techniques from various Earth born styles such as Capoeira and Jujitsu. He is also sometimes seen reverting back to street fighting techniques including heavy environmental attacks and he personally brags about once knocking out a Klingon with a "Haymaker". His training is usually weight heavy and his upper body seems to be his focus despite the appearance of his muscular legs.
Side Trait
- Medic: Though not as skilled in this area as in Engineering Commander Helms is a self taught field medic. He has saved many lives with his skills. Still limited however he has many times needed his doctor or the EMH for surgical procedures.

Maiden Voyage
The USS Excursion was seen by many as old, washed up, and past its prime by many however it is for those reasons that the ship was not decommissioned but would be given to any who would attempt revitalization. Seeing this as his chance to finally get himself on the map Commander Helms requested and was granted permission to claim the vessel. Having not been a flight in almost 20 earth years, the ship was in deep need of repair. Though he was an explorer Lt. Helms had a reasonable background in engineering from his father who once was a chief engineer.
By 2408 the ship was ready to be flown and Lt. Helms took it on its first departure. Using a scout crew for the time being, he was alerted of a Vulcan ship being attacked by Klingons. Outmatched by its superior weaponry Commander Helms found a way to beam the Vulcans aboard his ship and fly warp 9.5 away to Starbase 19 where his ship and he as well as his crew would stay until 2409. The Vulcans offered to be part of the crew and so Commander Helms was already meeting new civilizations and received recognition for his efforts.
