Classification: Humanoid
Gender:Male
Species: Dedanaan
Affiliation: United Federation Of Planets

Family

Father:Cathán Vargas, 64, Barkeep and brew master
Mother:Aoife Vargas, 59, Captain Dedanaan Space Force, deceased

Personality

Easy going but very correct in his manners, Jamis' outward appearance is that of a perfect Starfleet officer. However, he has reservations about his ability to be true leader, and these fears seemed to be proven in his Academy records. Only his amazing aptitude for the sciences and his skill in tactical maneuvers enabled him to graduate. Outside of work, Jamis is often described as "laid back, but competitive," a seemly nonsensical description. However, it fits him. He will compete with anyone, anytime, and do his best to come out on top, but he isn't driven to be better than everyone. Instead, he considers it to be more of a competition against himself, to constantly better himself. He looks up to Jean-Luc Picard as one of his greatest heroes, along with his deceased mother.

Appearance

Dedanaans, being of human stock that has been genetically altered to live on their arid, tough planet, look very much like humans, and Jamis is a fairly typical looking Dedanaan. Some differences include the extremely bright red hair that Dedanaans, proud of their Irish roots, altered to be the dominant hair color, and their extremely thick skin, altered to assist in shielding them from the high radiation output of their sun. Jamis is typical of Dedanaans in that he is very strong and fit, but not overly bulky, given as they are to whipcord muscles. Although the average Dedanaan is in extremely better shape than the average human, they are not inherently any stronger or quicker.

Biography

The Early Years

Jamis Vargas was born and raised in the capitol of Dedanaan, Tuatha, to Cathán and Aoife Vargas. Cathán ran a bar where many of the elite Space Force choose to spend their time and money, and his mother was one of the best pilots the young, pre-warp military had ever seen. Though incapable of warp, the Dedanaan crafts' exceptional weaponry was sufficient to discourage most pirates until shortly after Jamis' 13th birthday, when the Orion Syndicate began to move into the area. In a series of extremely brutal space battles, the Orions were forced to retreat. However, Jamis' mother Aoife was severely wounded in the fighting, and died of complications before Jamis' 14th birthday. He swore vengeance, praying that the scientists would soon unlock the secret of warp drives from captured Orion vessels so that he could help hunt down and kill the men who took his mother. Just over a year later, 2 months before his 15th birthday, a Federation survey ship stumbled upon their colony, and Jamis got his wish, if not quite in the way he had expected.

Starfleet Academy (2394-2398)

Jamis studied extremely hard for the next 3 years, and was awarded with the opportunity to get into Starfleet Academy. He passed all the entrance exams (although he was nearly rejected during the psych eval due to his desire for revenge). Once at the Academy, Jamis threw himself into his work. Due to a lifetime of listening to tales of fighting from his mother, he was able to do well in tactics, and his natural aptitude for anything relating to the sciences amazed his intstructors, especially since the rest of his workload suffered. The only exceptions was engineering, where, again, his early childhood watching and helping his mother tinker with her personal craft enabled him to get somewhat respectable marks, and Hand to hand combat, where his above average strength, agility, and quickness allowed him to defeat many more skillfull opponents. Jamis graduated ranked in the top 20% of his class in terms of command potential, which surprised everyone, especially him. He had received horrible marks for leadership in most his simulations, and only pulled through due to innovative ideas and tactics he drew from his mother's many stories. However, he was not told that he was one of the very few cadets to come even close to defeating the Kobayashi Maru simulation (though, of course, ramming is generally frowned upon in Starfleet. And he still lost). Even more importantly, Jamis soon became fascinated with Jean-Luc Picard, and learned everything he could about the great man's life and career. In doing so, he soon realized that his desire for vengeace was a mistake for any Starfleet officer, and eventually let go of his hate.

First Assignment: USS Inspiration (2398-2402)

Upon his graduation in 2406, Jamis was assigned to the USS Inspiration, an Intrepid class, as the Science Officer's second. 2 years after he reported aboard, He was standing watch on the bridge when the Inspiration was ambushed by a quartet of Orion pirates. The initial attack killed the Science Officer, Navigator, and First officer, leaving Vargas the senior officer on the bridge for the critical 5 minutes it took his captain to get to bridge through the wreckage. In that time, Ensign (soon promoted to Lt (j.g.) Vargas used the knowledge his mother had passed on to him of Orion tactics and thinking to outmaneuver and out-fight the aggressors. When his captain finally arrived, 1 of the enemy vessels was destroyed, 2 were so severely damaged they were unable to fight, and the fourth was warping out of the system to look for easier prey. Due to his extraordinary handling of the ship during the crisis, Vargas was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant, and was made the Science Officer. Vargas served for 2 more years aboard the Inspiration, serving with distinction while the ship was tasked with patrolling the Orion border. His knowledge of Orion tactics and thinking were key in the Inspiration's patrols, and the Inspiration came to be the most feared name among Orion pirates in the area. However, Starfleet decided it needed Vargas' expertise elsewhere, and he was ordered to Earth for his next assignment.

Instructor years (2402-2404)

When Jamis arrived on Earth, he was amazed to find that he was being assigned to Starfleet Academy as an instructor in tactical analysis. He was amazed, as he had never commanded a ship, nor even srved in tactical branch. However, he soon found that his classwas an experiment by Starfleet, with different specialists coming in to lecture on each of the races considered threats to the Federation. He was, of course, the Orion expert. While at Starfleet, he also worked with the Science department in developing more powerful phaser designs by integrating his people's plasgun technology. The Nx-91001's advanced phasers are the result of the work done by the team there, and Vargas found himself transferred to his next command after only 2 years at the Academy due to this research. He would have been upset about leaving the Academy so early, but the assignment came with a promotion to Lt. Commander, and the XO's spot aboard his new vessel. And, even better in Vargas' opinion, the Helsinki was to be deployed to the Orion front. This would not only allow him to do what he did best, but it also put ihm much closer to home.

USS Helsinki(2404-2408)

When Lt. commander Vargas reported aboard the Helsinki, he was amazed at the advances that had been made even over the Intrepid class he had served aboard before. While smaller and not as spacious in accomodations as the Intrepid, the Oslo class vessel was a much more powerful vessel. Built from scratch to be an experimental weapons platform, the Helsinki had been given the very best technology, making it even more powerful than the normal production Oslo's. In the first two years of service aboard the Helsinki, Vargas performed very well, and added to his abilities by learning a great deal from his captain, a veteran of both Wolf 359 and the Dominion wars and an amazingly adept ship handler. Combining the old warhorse's experience and his knowledge of the Orions, not to mention the new phasers, which performed even better than expected, created such an overpowering advantage that the Orions quickly caved, and signed a non-aggression pact with the Federation much sooner than anyone at Starfleet Command had deemed likely. Once the pact had been finalized, the Helsinki was diverted to the Klingon front to deal with the situation there. For their actions in the Orion sector, the entire crew received commendations. Although his captain refused the offer of an Admiralcy, Vargas was happy to be informed that he was now a full Commander. In the next two years on the klingon front, the Helsinki, and especially Commander Vargas, distinguished themselves, completing every assignment efficiently and often going above and beyond the mission parameters to further the cause of the Federation.

First Command: USS Saoirse

In 2408, commander Vargas received the most important assignment so far: his own ship. Starfleet Command ordered him to Dedanaan to pick up the brand new Excalibur class ship, the Saoirse. It was the first production vessel to be outfitted with the new-type phasers, and had a few additional upgrades to the 17 year old Excalibur class. The assignment also came with a promotion to Captain, and an assignment to 12th fleet under Admiral Picard. When he told his parents on leave between assignments, his father was very proud, and the entire Dedanaan senate congratulated him, not only on being the first Dedanaan Captain and commander of a vessel, but also because the Saoirse was the first ship to be built largely with Dedanaan labor and crewed by the first enlisted Dedanaan crew. While Vargas was pleased with his success and the honor of commanding members of his own race, he began to wonder if his appointment was truly due only to his record. When he questioned his father (not a member of congrss, but most defintely the most inlfuential barkeep in the system) about it, his father told him that, whatever the reasons, he knew he deserved it. This was not the answer Jamis wanted, and he decided to look into it further, unaware of the secrets he would uncover.

Repercussions

After asking around, Jamis discovered who to go to for answers. Senator Esteves McGregor, the head of the Military Liason Committtee, agreed to meet with him to discuss the matter. During the discussion, McGregor, assuming Jamis' father had already told him, mentioned the Dedanaan people's secret, known only to the high elected officials and those who, like Cathan Vargas, were directly descended from the colony's founding leaders. The Dedanaan had been genetically altered to a degree illegal in the Federation. When Jamis confronted his father with this, Cathan explained that he had not told Jamis so that he could not accidentally let it slip while in Starfleet, but that he would tell him everything. Once Jamis had the full story, he became torn in his loyalties. His people had not done this for any reason other than survival, but the Federation still needed to know. Deciding he had to do the honorable thing as a Starfleet officer, he went to his old captain on the Helsinki, who had finally been promoted to Rear Admiral the year before, and told him everything. When Starfleet was informed of the deception, they relieved all Dedanaan officers of their duties pending investigation, and put all enlisted personnel on temporary hold. In the meantime, a group of Federation geneticists went to Dedanaan and began to investigate the records of the original alterations that Dedanaan officials, persuaded by Cathan Vargas and other leaders, made available to them. in the end, the Federation ruled that, because none of the Dedanaans serving in Starfleet had known of the situation, they were not ot be punished. In addition, as all of the modifications(with the exception of the alteration of the red hair gene to become dominant, which did nothing to affect their abilities and was therefore decided to be harmless) had been necessary to the colonists' survival, the Dedanaan could continue to serve in Starfleet. However, the Dedanaan Senate was condemned for their deception in the matter, and lost all of the prestige they ahad gained for their help in developing much of the newer Federation technology. Because of this, Captain Vargas is now considered persona-non-grata by the Dedanaan government. While his father has used his influence to allow Jamis to visit, he has been denied the right to live in the Dedanaan system, and no Dedanaan merchant (other than his father and a few of his father's friends) will deal with him. In addition, many Dedanaan crewmembers transferred off the Saoirse in short order, though many were just as angry as he was for being lied to their entire lives, and stuck by him.

The Saoirse's Maiden Voyage(2408-present)

After the political backlash had subsided, Captain Vargas was finally able to take the Saoirse on her maiden voyage. It wasn meant to be a simple mercy mission, taking food and medical supplies to an independant world struck by famine and disease. However, when the Saoirse entered the system, they were ambushed by a Dominion Battleship. Although the Saoirse's superior technology enabled Vargas to damage the Dominion vessel badly enough to force them to retreat, his ship was so severely damaged that it took 3 days to repair the warp drive. During this time, Vargas went with an away team to the planet to attempt to discover why the Dominion had sent a battleship so far from the front. What he discovered was horrible. Both the bad crops and the disease were due to the Dominion, who had spread viruses to attempt to weaken the world's resolve and attempt to get them to join the Dominion. After his Science Officer discovered the key to unraveling the viruses, Vargas took the Saoirse back to Earth for repairs, along with the world's leaders. Though they had been stubbornly independent since their discovery by the Federation a century ago, the attacks by the Dominion had had the opposite effect they had hoped for, and the Federation would soon have a new world. captain Vargas is now on Earth, waiting for repairs to be completed to his ship, and awaiting Starfleet's next mission for his ship and crew.

Pastimes/Hobbies

Growing up, Jamis trained with his parents in Sli Beatha, the eclectic martial art practiced by many on Dedanaan, and he continues to seek sparring partners of any technique to train against. While in the Academy, he became interested in Kenjutsu, and began learning this as well. He can often be found on the holodeck, sparring with imaginary partners (unless a real person is available). Jamis also enjoys a good book, and he astounded friends and instructors with his enormous appetite for new material. finally, he can spend hours tinkering with some science experiment, or out with technicians working on a runabout, which reminds him of the days he would spend helping his mother do the same thing.

Inventory

Jamis carries his personal communicator and his specially modified tricorder. When in unfriendly or uncertain territory, he also carries his phaser (which he modified to a pistol grip format, as he learned to shoot with plasma pistols back home) and numerous blades on his person, including at least 6 throwing knives and a 16 inch fighting blade he and his father made back on his home world. he also carries a small holdout phaser up his left sleeve at all times, and he tailors his own uniforms in order to discretely include places for all of his weaponry without any of it being obvious. Though not warlike by nature, his years growing up on his harsh home world has led to Jamis being accustomed to going heavily armed.
